Wilson Lane, Bethesda, Maryland

Holbert Apple Associates provided the structural design for the new three-story, plus full basement level, custom single-family residence located two blocks from the Woodmont Triangle area of downtown Bethesda Maryland.  Some of the modern architectural features include an exposed flat steel plate front entrance canopy, large windows, two second floor roof terraces with glass railings, and flat roofs throughout.

The structure consists mostly of wood framing (conventional lumber, wood I-joists, and engineered wood members), supported by wood stud bearing and lateral shear walls.  8” thick concrete basement foundation walls are present at the perimeter of the house.  In order to accommodate the completely open first floor kitchen/living/dining area (approx. 28’-0” by 35’-0”), steel girders and posts were designed to support the first and second floor joists.  A two-bay steel moment frame was designed to accommodate two hung operable glass doors that makeup the entire rear exterior wall at the first floor.  With the operable doors open there is an unobstructed view of the backyard and access to a screened-in porch.  Holbert Apple also provided the structural design of the custom open stairs, consisting of solid wood treads supported by steel plates and a single steel tube stair stringer.
