Holbert Apple provided engineering consultations to the General Contractor for this historic structure, originally constructed in 1941. We provided assistance with construction sequencing and demolition sequence determination. Our tasks required a complete analysis of this rare, thin-shell concrete structure. Upon review of historical documentation, and along with selective field measurements and observations, we performed finite-element analysis of the existing barrel vault dome to provide recommendations for sequencing the partial demolition of the shell. Through this analysis, we were able to correlate results from “modern” methods with the original “historic” method of calculations for shells, dating to the 1930’s.
Holbert Apple also designed various temporary bracing elements, including a lateral drift tower to provide lateral rigidity to the entire structure during the construction phase.
